Vocal Performance and Industry Audition Workshop
This class is designed to offer a public performance setting for singers. Singing publicly, within the constructive studio environment, each singer is challenged to evaluate and encourage their personal level of talent, preparation, and professionalism. Kurt provides positive and professional coaching in musicality, communication, song interpretation and overall performance skills.
For this special class, each student should please bring and be prepared with:
1) 2 copies of your music: one in sheet protectors, in your music binder for the accompanist; one for the instructor to use.
2) Name the composer and lyricists, and show or film of origin.
3) Write your lyrics as a monologue, in proper poetic form (as opposed to free style). Each student may be asked to read their song as a monologue. Please be prepared for this exercise.
4) Know the facts: write a brief character analysis from the actual context of the original show or film. If a pop/rock song, research some insight into the inspiration for the song.
a) Ask: what time/place?, what culture?, what age?, what income level?, what education?, what job? what experience?, what before/after?, etc.
5) Use your creativity as you start to develop your own interpretation by
a) Finding an intention: what does your character want in this moment, what is his/her goal or objective?
b) Finding the obstacle to achieving your goal/objective.
c) Finding an action verb to depict a physical type of behavior that would help you complete your objective
d) Finding your character's “relationship to love”
6) Bring an activity. This is something that may or may not have anything to do with your song. Find something simple that can engage you while you sing e.g. playing catch, tying your shoes, knitting, folding laundry, playing a game, etc.
